EARTH DAY?
04.23.08 (9:55 am) [edit]
My wife has a calender at home, and for some reason it has national days listed for Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US. (In case you did not know, I live in The United Kingdom)
Yesterday, it said it was EARTH DAY in the US. Can any americans explain what earth day is, did they celebrate it, and is it a holiday????

Hi there... Long time no see. Earth Day is a day set aside to remember we live on a small planet and that we're supposed to take care of it. It's celebrated by a few speeches here and there and by folks, perhaps, picking up litter as they walk about. I think that's about it lately. Seems like it was a slightly bigger deal when they came up with the idea twenty or twenty-five years ago. But, on the whole, as a people, we simply don't give enough of a shit to really pay attention too much any more. After all, American Idol is on TV and the mortgage payment is likely overdue.

It is a "holiday" with the best intentions and does get some attention, but it shoudl be something focused on daily and not just one day a year.
It is better than nothing, but still a long way to go.

Yes, Go Green is the theme. It is a day of recognition mostly -- clean up your trash and respect nature and the enviroment. Many companies are going green now and the new focus is to find alternative sources of energy besides oil and gas.
Some of the Earth Day activities are going to public places (parks, beaches, streets, your neighborhood) in teams and picking up trash.
